The idea of spiritual awakening has been present in many cultures and religions. Some call it ‘enlightenment or ‘bliss’ and modern psychiatrist Carl Jung refers to it as a ‘coming back to the original Self’. This experience of rising to a higher state of consciousness often comes with a certain excitement as we find ourselves feeling a new sense of being in this world.
WHAT TRIGGERS A SPIRITUAL AWAKENING?
“Spiritual awakenings can be spontaneous”, says spiritual author Shannon Kaiser, but most of the time, “they’re triggered by major life changes” such as illnesses, accidents, separations, midlife crisis, depression or even anxiety. Eventually, anything that encourages you to take a different perspective on your life from a spiritual point of view can be a trigger to spiritual awakening.
SIGN 1: DETACHMENT
At the beginning of a spiritual awakening process, you might feel overwhelmed by all kinds of emotions. The things and the people you used to enjoy might not give you the same satisfaction and you might start to question your perspectives on the things and people in your life.
SIGN 2: CHANGING YOUR BELIEFS
We’re constantly evolving beings and it is ok to reevaluate your beliefs and change your mind on things. When you go through a spiritual awakening it is very likely you will start shifting your beliefs - deconstruct why you think a certain way about certain things and adopt a new set of spiritual beliefs. Whether that means changing jobs, walking away from a toxic relationship or pursuing a new passion, you’re likely to take a new turn in life.
SIGN 3: CHANGE IN RELATIONSHIPS
As you’re going through this inner transformation the changes that come with it might not be understood by everyone in your entourage and this is totally fine. Gently remind your loved ones to respect what you’re going through and that they do not need to resonate with your awakening.
SIGN 4: HEIGHTENED INTUITION
As you’re shedding old parts of yourself and uncovering the ego, you might feel more in tune with yourself. Heightened intuition is often a sign you’re aligning to your inner compass. You’re more able to sense inauthenticity and do not hesitate to walk away when someone is deceiving you.
SIGN 5: ACCEPTATION
As you’re advancing in your own spiritual journey, you also become more accepting of other people’s own unique paths. Instead of wanting to win an argument or convince people of certain views, you understand there is no need for that anymore and that everyone is on their own journey towards spiritual growth too.
