Breathwork to Self-Heal

Breathwork is a meditation - but an active one, meaning you are engaged and working during it. This technique is used to safely release buried emotional energy, build your connection to the self and bring clarity of mind.

NOTICE BREATHING

Breathing is a free and powerful tool to positively impact your health and reduce pain and stress. Your breath is your source of oxygen, which is key to the body's ability to produce energy. Start paying attention to the quality of your respiration - is your breath deep or shallow? Does your posture encourage or restrict your ability to take deep breaths?

DEEP BREATHING

Deep breathing is a breathing technique that helps you relax and release the stress build-up. Start this technique by placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Take a long inhalation through your nose while counting to six. Hold your breath to the count of three, then exhale through your mouth for a count of six. Repeat for seven to 12 cycles.

4-7-8 BREATHING

Based on an ancient yogic technique called Pranayama, the 4-7-8 breathing technique helps practitioners gain control over their breathing when practised regularly. To practice 4-7-8 breathing, settle in a comfortable position or lie down. Inhale silently through your nose for a count of four. Next, hold your breath for seven seconds. Exhale entirely through your mouth for a count of eight. Repeat this pattern four times.

STOMACH BREATHING

Chest breathing limits the amount of oxygen can take in with each breath, Instead, allow your abdomen to expand, then breathe. To do so, use your transverse abdominis: the muscle layer of the front and side abdominal wall. This breathing technique allows your diaphragm to drop, thus opening up your lungs.
